If you've been following me the last couple months, you know that I've been doing an epic amount of conventions. And by "epic" I mean "crazy". I just did a two-fer of New York Comic-Con and then GeekGirlCon back to back. But, because I'm living life on the road, I haven't been posting as much stuff here as I'd like. It's a little clunkier to post from my iPhone, plus, you know, general busy-ness. So, as things are quieting down, I'm going to post some of my favorite art, commissions and photos from my convention season. First up, well, it's not any of those. My friend Tim Wallace is the brain behind the Kord Industries blog and part of the well-oiled machine that is the Baltimore Comic-Con. I've owed him a Blue Beetle piece for a couple months now, and I've finally managed to get it done. And now, I share it with you. Click and embiggen!
Me and Comic-Con 2013
Comic-Con is this week. You may have heard, it's been in all the papers. So this will probably be my last post before the craziness of the con sweeps me away. So, first, don't bother trying to reach me this week unless you're about to offer me a boatload of money to do something for you, or your house is on fire. And if your house is on fire, it had better be totally on fire, not just a couple of rooms. Sorry, but that's just the way these things go. I'll be back on the grid next week for everything else.
Second, I'll be on the Kids' Comics Panel on Sunday at Noon in Room 30CDE. Come on by and watch me say something funny.
Past that, I'll be at my booth, #2000, the rest of the show. Please bring coffee. I'll have all four trades of Love and Capes there, more than I can possibly sell during the show. I mean, there's no way you could swarm me and wipe out my stock. Go ahead, I dare you to try!
I'll also have copies of my issue of My Little Pony, the original art from that book, pre-drawn commissions and sketchcards, my Rhinos Bowling book in both hardcover and softcover, my San Diego print, the Print Portfolio, and sets of postcards. I'll also be taking commission requests. And, if you want to make sure things don't sell out, order it from my site and I'll make sure to put it aside.
Also, I'll have a limited number of my new print collaboration with justJENN Recipes! Definitely come by and get one of those.
Edit: I'll also have Deal of the Day coupons every day. They'll appear here and on my Twitter feed at 8:00am Thursday-Sunday!
Of course, I'll be signing anything you've got and looking forward to meeting some new people and old friends and having great conversations.
For all the hassles and expense and effort, I love doing Comic-Con. I hope to see you there.
Free Comic Book Day 2013
It's Free Comic Book Day again, one of my favorite days of the year. I'll be back at Captain Blue Hen in Delaware. Last year was an absolute blast, and I'm looking forward to this year. I'll be taking commissions, selling artwork, including a smattering of My Little Pony sketchcards. And, of course, I'll have all four collections of Love and Capes available, too. Not only is tomorrow the big holiday for comics, but it's also the big Star Wars Day, May the Fourth (be with you). My fantastic fianceé has a blog about celebrating the day up at the Star Wars Insider blog.
Hope you have a good FCBD/Star Wars Day/Man of Steel trailer watchin' day, whatever you do!
#sdcc Thursday Love and Capes Deal (please RT)
Today's deal is $25.00 off a color commission. I take commissions at shows. These pieces of original art are 9x12, inked in pen and brush. I normally charge $25.00 per character for black-and-white, $50.00 per character for color. So, if you want a character in color, you get it for the price of black-and-white. If you want three characters in color, normally $150, you can get it for $125. The only thing you can't use it on is a multi-character black-and-white piece.
Don't forget, we're at Booth 2000!
#sdcc Deal-of-the-Day Coupons!
I'm trying something new for this year's Comic-Con International: Coupons! I'm doing a special deal-of-the-day coupon. Every day at 8:00am California time, I'll post the deal here on my website and on my Twitter feed. You just need to print out the coupon, or show it to me on your phone or tablet or computer and get the deal. And each deal ends at the close of the show that day.
I'll also put the instructions for the coupon with every deal, too.
Everything Happens For a Reason
Time to share some artwork! Here are some cartoons I did for my client, Learn It Systems, for some program books/covers that they were putting together.
The bee image was done for the younger set, and the cave image was done for slightly older kids. My main contact at Learn It and I share a love for Lost, and we started describing the cave as the one from the show with the water and the light and that plug thing. So, I went ahead and drew the lead kid to be reminiscent of Ben.
Those little things are why we work so well together.

From the 30th... er, 31st Century!
I posted this on Twitter a couple days ago (see, you should be following me on Twitter or my Facebook page, shouldn't you?) but wanted to share it here, too. Amongst the big fun I had at the Lake Effect Comic Con this past weekend, I took a couple of commission requests, including this one to do Superboy with the original three Legionairres. For as many times as I've drawn Superman, it's interesting to find a way to make him look like SuperBOY. I think it came out pretty good.
Maybe Just This Once He Looks Like Me
A lot of people say I based Mark on me. Not so. Man, I wish I looked like that, and that my hair worked that way.
When I originally designed him, he was blonde. In his original incarnation, it made him look too much like Mr. Incredible, so the hair had to go. Black was out, as that was too Superman. I wasn't in favor of red, so what was left was brown. There weren't a lot of brown haired heroes anyway when I was growing up, Green Lantern being the notable exception. Yeah, there was Peter Parker and Cyclops, but I wasn't into Marvel back then.
Mark does act like me, though. I'm the main model for most of the characters. When I have to think of how someone would stand when they open a door or read a letter, I'm the guy who's the template. In this scene, Mark's working in him home office, so he's dressed casually. I dressed him the way I've been known to dress. Heck, I was actually wearing that outfit when I drew it, because I was trying to nail how an open shirt would hang and fold.
Why he's doing what he's doing in that panel is immaterial. You'll find out in May anyway. But the way he's sitting, grabbing from one stack and tossing away with another hand, I think it looks right. He looks like he's really inhabiting that world. I think it's one of the best things I've drawn in a while. (And, I attribute a lot of my character's better acting to the Drawn to Life series of books collecting the lectures of Walt Stanchfield. If you're an artist, buy 'em both. Now!)
Sometimes the little moments are the toughest, and the most worth it when you get it right.
Free Comic Book Day 2010 Advertising Opportunities
Love and Capes #13 will be part of the Free Comic Book Day festivities on May 1st, 2010. As in past years, the book will have space for advertising. Wanna be part of it?
New Products in the Love and Capes store!
You've been waiting for it, I know, and now it's here: New Love and Capes merchandise. What have we got? Both the Baltimore Comicon and Mid-Ohio-Con exclusives, new lanyards, the new "sketch" shirt design on blue and white ringers, black shirts, spaghetti strap tops, ribbed tank tops, and black hoodies. All sorts of coolness. And, as always, the full Love and Capes Store is available here.
But, let me throw a little more into the mix. All orders placed before October 31, 2009, will receive a free copy the convention exclusive.
